A recent
cabinet meeting has approved
Nepal Rastra Bank's proposal
to use the Buddha's picture
instead of the king's on Rs
500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes.
According to a source, the
cabinet has picked the
Buddha picture from among
various alternatives
suggested by the Notes
Design Committee of Nepal Rastra Bank. The central
bank had initiated the
exercise to replace the
king's picture from notes of
all denominations following
the historic April Movement
that sidelined the monarchy
from state affairs and even
raised questions about its
very survival. Except for
the picture nothing will
change in the design of the
notes.
